This year Southern Exposure will organise Nature Based Adventure Programs for more than 15,000 clients from Australia and internationally.

Our staff are trained leaders in their respective fields.

We operate in accordance with DEET Safety Guidelines and the Outdoor Recreation Centre: Adventure Activities Standards for Surfing Lessons, Mountain Biking & Kayaking (www.orc.org.au)

Learn to Surf

Students will gain confidence and experience the power of the surf in a safe and controlled program.

Skills

  • Surf safety & awareness
  • To identify and safely negotiate a rip current
  • Other dangers that may present themselves at the beach
  • Board handling skills
  • How to negotiate the surf
  • Which waves are best to catch and why
  • Correct techniques for position, paddling, standing and control for their own level of agility while surfing
Duration:  2 hour to multi day
Year Level:  From Year 5, Secondary & Tertiary
Fitness Required:  Low
Proficiency Level:  Learn to Surf, Progressive & Advanced
Locations:  Torquay Surf Beach, Anglesea Main Beach, Lorne Beach and Ocean     Grove Beach
Maximum No:  50 people per 2 hour session

 Don’t forget to combine the surfing with a Mountain Bike Ride and a Surf  Kayak Program


 Mountain Biking

X Country Mountain Biking – follows a challenging single track circuit across undulating terrain and along the Southern Oceans rugged cliff tops.

 

Duration:  2 hour
Fitness Required:  Low
Proficiency Level:  Learner, Progressive & Advanced
Locations:  Anglesea / Torquay
Maximum No:  30 people per session

 

Surf Coast Mountain Bike Tour – follows scenic coastal bush tracks, winding along the impressive stretch of coast between Anglesea and Torquay, through Point Addis and the Iron Bark Basin to Bells Beach, Winkipop, Jan Juc and finishing at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club.

Duration:  3 hour
Fitness Required:  Low
Proficiency Level:  Learner, Progressive & Advanced
Locations:  Anglesea / Torquay
Maximum No:  30 people per session

 

Skills covered in class include:

  • Each lesson the participants will be taught correct bike handling skills
  • Weight distribution
  • Breaking techniques
  • Negotiation of challenging terrain
  • Gear use
  • Environmental impact of riding

X Country and the Surf Coast Tour are suitable for year 7 to 12 students and Tertiary.  Particularly relevant to Outdoor Education and Environmental Science students.

*Combo idea – Ride to the beach and follow with a Sea Kayak paddle @ Point Danger


Kayaking

Surf Kayaking – is an intensely fun team building program.  The  ‘Sit on Top’ kayaks are designed to catch waves and students will fall off in a completely controlled environment.  Kayaking is a fantastic way to view the coast from a different perspective, while exploring the Point Danger Marine Park or the Anglesea Main Beach.

Proficiency Level:  Learner, Progressive & Advanced
Locations:  Anglesea, Torquay & Lorne
Maximum No:  28 people per session

 

Kayaking on Anglesea River – a smooth and protected paddling session following the tidal Anglesea River to the wetlands surrounding the Coogoorah Park.  The area is an interesting combination of bush islands linked by boardwalks and offers paddlers and excellent opportunity to experience the flora and fauna of this interesting wetland.

 

Duration:  2 hour
Fitness Required:  Low
Proficiency Level:  Learner, Progressive & Advanced
Locations:  Anglesea
Maximum No:  28 people per session

Skills covered in class include:

  • Safety, dangers and water awareness
  • Basic paddling techniques
  • How to capsize safely and get back on
  • How to paddle out through the surf
  • Catching waves and turning

We belong to a network comprising of the many school camps, surf clubs and foreshore camp grounds along the Great Ocean Road.

Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallion Courses 

Southern Exposure is a Registered Training Provider for Surf Life Saving Victoria.LSV_Logo_RGB

We can train your students to manage potentially life threatening situations. The prestigious

Surf Life Saving Bronze is a 5 day program available to students over 14 and teachers.

This award also increases employment opportunities with many employers requiring individuals conducting aquatic programs to have a Bronze Medallion qualification.

 Outcomes of the Surf Bronze – able to respond to an aquatic emergency using water rescue techniques and provide emergency care.   

Units of competency gained from this course:              

HLTCPR201B – Perform CPR

Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)                            This is a national VET qualification
